Windows 7 Beta

Just tried out the Window 7 Beta with a couple of machines.  I must say that this new Windows version rocks!

Tried it on an old Dell Lattitude X300 which only had a WinXP sticker on it.  Even though it was running a old ULV Centrino single core processor with 1GB of RAM and an old 40GB harddisk.  I must say that the performance was as good if not more responsive than the Windows XP (perhaps due to IE8 and the lower memory footprint?).  The only downside was that it did not have display drivers for the old crappy Intel integrated chipset so the Aero effects were missing with the default VGA driver.

I also just tried it out on a Kohjinsha SR netbook (Intel A110 processor, 2GB RAM, Intel Integrated graphics).  This was a lot better as the OS had almost all the hardware drivers for the netbook.  The touchscreen even worked out of the box which is quite surprising.  Normally you need to install drivers and some tweaking to get it to work right (e.g. in Ubuntu).  The performance is also pretty good and Aero works fully as well (e.g. taskbar window hover effects). Cool stuff!

So far most of the stuff that works with Vista works on Windows 7.  Some programs like Daemon Tools don't work but that's probably because of drive compatibility issues.  There's a good list up on this page which shows which programs have been tested (http://www.joejoe.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=17767).

If you have any other experiences with Windows 7 that you would like to share, feel free to do so.  Cheers.
